Prof. Doron Aurbach

Head of the BIU Center for Energy & Sustainability

Bar-Ilan University

Prof. Doron Aurbach is a professor in the department of Chemistry since 1 Oct. 1996, chemical engineer (1982), leading the electrochemistry group (40 people) at Bar-Ilan university (BIU) Israel. Aurbach found the electrochemistry group at BIU in October 1985, chaired the department of chemistry during 2001-2005. 65 PhD and 80 MSc students received their degrees under his supervision since then. He chaired Israel National Labs Accreditation Authority 2010-2016. He is the head of INREP: Israel national research center for electrochemical propulsion (found in 2012, 26 research groups, 7 Israeli institutions), developing power sources for transportation. He also leads the Energy & Sustainability Center of BIU. He has published more than 730 peer reviewed papers in electrochemistry, physical chemistry, energy research, surface & materials science (> 80900 citations, H-index 137, Nov. 21), serves also as a senior editor for the journal of the Electrochemical Society, in charge of the Batteries and Energy Storage (BES) technical area. He is MRS, ECS & ISE fellow. Aurbach’s group develops new battery systems for electro-mobility, large energy storage for sustainable energy and water purification, desalination & disinfection technologies. They are establishing all the necessary basic scientific background required for the practical achievements, including development of a variety of in-situ spectro-electrochemical methodologies, studies of non-aqueous electrochemical systems, new solution chemistries, understanding the correlation among electrochemical response, structure, morphology and surface chemistry of a large variety of useful electrodes’ materials, thus keeping an optimal balance between practical and basic studies. This group collaborates very actively with leading industries including Nichia (Japan), cATL (China), BASF (Germany), GM (USA). D. Aurbach  won several prestigious prizes and awards, including the Israel  Chemical Society’s Gold Medal (2020), Eric and Sheila Samson Prime Minister’s Prize for Innovation in Alternative Fuels for Transportation (2018), the International Society of Electrochemistry’s Alexander Frumkin Medal (2018), the Electrochemical Society’s Allen J. Bard Medal  (2017), the International Battery Association’s Ernest B. Yeager Award for outstanding contributions to electrochemical energy conversion and storage science (2014).
