About

The National Institute for Energy Storage is an initiative of the Ministry of Energy, established under the leadership of Bar-Ilan University and the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, with the goal of strengthening Israel’s leadership in this field. The Institute focuses on advanced research, professional training in the knowledge areas required for electrochemical storage, and the promotion and transfer of innovative technologies from academia to industry.

Israel’s leading energy storage researchers from Bar-Ilan and the Technion are spearheading this national effort, in collaboration with dozens of research groups from seven academic institutions in Israel. Led by these two institutions, the Institute has all the capabilities needed to offer storage solutions at any scale, including innovative rechargeable batteries, an efficient hydrogen economy, and carbon-neutral energy cycles. It also provides support in complementary fields such as electrical engineering, energy networks, regulation, and branding.

The Institute represents a revolutionary upgrade to Israel’s national energy capabilities: it develops long-term academia-industry-government interfaces, promotes breakthrough technologies for energy conversion and storage using electrochemical methods, leads unique training programs, and encourages the establishment of Israeli knowledge-based startups-aiming to create an independent green energy industry in Israel. This upgrade includes: at the Technion – the addition of revolutionary analytical equipment; and at Bar-Ilan – the establishment of prototype laboratories where academic knowledge is transformed into practical, mass-producible devices. In this way, scientific research becomes a true engine of growth for Israel’s economy and society. The equipment will be available to serve the entire Israeli energy research community.

Calls for Proposals

The National Institute for Energy Storage (INIES) is pleased to announce calls for proposals to support applied scientific research in energy conversion and storage technologies. Current global energy consumption relies heavily on fossil fuels, resulting in significant CO₂ emissions that drive dangerous climate change. Decarbonization of electricity generation requires extensive use of renewable energy sources, mainly solar and wind, coupled with advanced energy storage solutions focused on electrochemical technologies. NIES invites accredited higher education institutions to submit proposals for innovative research projects that advance the development of cost-effective, durable, and scalable batteries, hydrogen production systems, fuel cells, and related energy storage technologies. This platform will host details of open calls and highlight selected awardees.
